Kathleen Kathy Smith, Republican, for Public Defender 20th Judicial Circuit
2008 election
Welcome to www.KeepKathyPublicDefender.com. Governor Charlie Crist appointed me to the position of Public Defender, 20th Judicial Circuit, following an application and interview process highlighting my administrative and budgetary credentials.
During my 18 years as an Assistant Public Defender, I have been blessed with a multitude of opportunities to make positive contributions to our justice system and our community. I have led the Public Defender's Office in our efforts to collaborate with key agencies in the justice system to develop and implement diversionary programs that have not only directly benefited our clients but have benefited the justice system as a whole. Additionally, I have demonstrated my leadership capabilities by effectively and efficiently managing each division within the Public Defender's office in Lee County. I have pursued formal management training by attending and teaching seminars offered by the Florida Public Defender Association as well as enrolling in the graduate studies program at Florida Gulf Coast University to obtain a masters degree in Public Administration. My position with the Public Defender's office has also afforded me opportunities to reach out into the community by participating on local Boards that address issues that I feel passionately about including addiction, mental health, and education of our youth.
My proven leadership ability, my formal management training, and my dedication to the citizens of the 20th Judicial Circuit uniquely qualify me to hold the title of Public Defender. Please explore my web site to learn more about my accomplishments and remember:
